Aus einer extrem populären und mäßig geschriebenen Romanreihe wird Fan-Fiction mit Erotikeinschlag. Aus dieser Fan-Fiction wird eine mäßig geschriebene und extrem populäre Romanreihe. Das bringt die Geschichte von Fifty Shades of Grey auf den Puinkt. Sollte das noch jemandem unbekannt sein – als Vorlage dienzte die Vampir-Schmonzette Twilight. Dem Erfolg tat es keinen Abbruch. Im Gegenteil – allein in Deutschland ging das erste Buch der Trilogie 2,3 Millionen Mal über die Ladentheke. Weltweit sind es bislang mehr als 70 Millionen Exemplare für die gesamte Trlogie. In manchen Märkten hat die Reihe sogar die Zahlen von Harry Potter und Twilight überholt. Und das, obwohl es sich um einen Softcore-Roman handelt, welche es seit jeher schon gibt. Nun ja.
Noch verwundernswerter ist jedoch, dass die unweigerliche Verfilmung des Romans nur so langsam in die Gänge kommt. Anfang letzten Jahres entbrannte ein heißer Kampf zwischen vielen Major-Studios in Hollywood um die Filmrechte. Universal ging am Ende als Sieger hervor und hat sich damit möglicherweise ihr eigenes "Twilight" gesichert. Seitdem gab es jedoch jede Menge Gerüchte – und kaum konkrete Entwicklungen. Gerade hier gilt, dass man das Eisen schmieden sollte, solange es heiß ist. Fifty Shades of Grey ist ein kulturelles Phänomen des Hier und Jetzt und die Popularität wird schon bald schwinden. Von Emma Watson über Mila Kunis, Ian Somerhalder und Alex Pettyfer bis hin zu Jennifer Love Hewitt, Emma Roberts, Henry Cavill und Krysten Ritter wurde gefühlt jeder zweite junge Star Hollywoods mit einer der beiden Hauptrollen in Verbindung gebracht. Das meiste davon reines Wunschdenken oder unbegründete bzw. weit hergeholte Gerüchte. Auch bei der Frage nach der Regie tauchten Namen wie Stephen Soderbergh, Gus Van Sant, Angelina Jolie und Bill Condon auf. Es waren jedoch nie mehr als reine Gerüchte. Doch jetzt wurde endlich jemand unter Vertrag genommen, um den Film zu inszenieren – Sam Taylor-Johnson (früher beklannt als Sam Taylor-Wood), die 2010 mit Nowhere Boy, dem Film über den jungen John Lennon, auf sich aufmerksam gemacht hat. Noch mehr als der Film selbst sorgte allerdings damals die Tatsache, dass Taylor-Wood dem 23 Jahre jüngeren Nowhere-Boy-Star Aaron Johnson (am besten bekannt durch die Titelrolle in Kick Ass) näher kam, für Aufmerksamkeit. Die beiden heirateten letztes Jahr.
Interessant ist jedenfalls, dass die Fifty Shades of Grey Regie an eine Frau ging, was angesichts der Story und des Zielpublikums durchaus passend erscheint. Auch beim ersten Twilight-Streifen hatte eine Frau die Zügel in der Hand (Catherine Hardwicke). Ich gehe davon aus, dass es jetzt nicht mehr sehr lange dauern wird, bis auch die beiden Hauptrollen besetzt sind. Unten haben wir für Euch noch das offizielle Press Release von Universal.
UNIVERSAL CITY, CA, June 19, 2013—Universal Pictures and Focus Features today announced that Sam Taylor-Johnson will direct the highly anticipated film adaptation of “Fifty Shades of Grey.” Michael De Luca and Dana Brunetti are producing the film based on E L James’ #1 bestselling book, alongside James. The announcement was made by Universal Pictures Co-Chairman, Donna Langley and Focus Features’ Chief Executive Officer, James Schamus.
“Sam’s unique ability to gracefully showcase complex relationships dealing with love, emotion and sexual chemistry make her the ideal director to bring Christian and Anastasia’s relationship to life,” said De Luca. “E L James’ characters and vivid storytelling require a director who is willing to take risks and push the envelope where needed and Sam is a natural fit.”
Taylor-Johnson most recently directed 2009’s Nowhere Boy, the story of John Lennon’s childhood in Liverpool, where his fledgling genius found a kindred spirit in the teenage Paul McCartney. The film garnered two BAFTA nominations, including “Outstanding British Film” and “Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer.” Taylor-Johnson also directed the critically acclaimed short Love You More which was nominated for the Palme D’Or in 2008. She is currently in development on a film for Columbia Pictures based on the novel by Robert Goorlick, “A Reliable Wife,” which is also being produced by De Luca.
“I am excited to be charged with the evolution of Fifty Shades of Grey from page to screen,” said Taylor-Johnson. “For the legions of fans, I want to say that I will honor the power of Erika’s book and the characters of Christian and Anastasia. They are under my skin too.”
Universal Pictures and Focus Features acquired the rights to the three books in the “Fifty Shades of Grey” trilogy in March 2012. Focus Features will market and distribute the first film in partnership with Universal. “Fifty Shades of Grey” has become a global phenomenon and the trilogy has been translated in 50 languages worldwide since its release. To date, the “Fifty Shades” trilogy has sold over 70 million copies worldwide in e-book and print, making it one of the fastest selling book series ever.
“Fifty Shades of Grey” follows the relationship of 27-year-old billionaire Christian Grey and college student Anastasia Steele. Subsequent novels in the series, “Fifty Shades Darker” (September 2011) and “Fifty Shades Freed” (January 2012) explore the couple’s deepening relationship.
